Resurfacing over your existing concrete with resin-bound aggregate

A lot of Round Rock homeowners assume a new driveway surface means tearing out the old one, hauling off the concrete, and starting from bare clay. Often it does not. When your existing concrete is structurally sound, resin-bound aggregate can be laid directly over it, which is faster, less disruptive, and lower-friction than a full tear-out and rebuild. The key word is sound. This page is the honest version of when resurfacing over concrete works, when it does not, and what we check to tell the difference.

When you can resurface over existing concrete

Resurfacing over concrete works when the slab underneath is in good enough shape to act as the base for the new surface. Resin-bound is a wear layer, and a wear layer needs a stable foundation. If your existing slab is that foundation, you are in good shape.

In practice, a slab is a good candidate for resurfacing when it is structurally sound, meaning it is not actively failing or moving. It can have surface wear, discoloration, old stains, a tired finish, and the usual cosmetic age that makes a twenty-year-old driveway look its years. None of that disqualifies it. What matters is whether the slab is stable and intact as a structure, not whether it looks good, because the resin-bound surface is what is going to look good.

Hairline cracks are normal and manageable. Cracks wider than about a quarter inch need to be repaired before the new surface goes over them, because an unaddressed crack of that size can telegraph through the new surface as the slab continues to move. That repair is part of the prep, not an afterthought. A sound slab with a few cracks properly repaired first is a strong candidate for resurfacing. A sound slab with a tired finish and nothing structurally wrong is an ideal one.

When you cannot, and why we will tell you

Here is the part a lot of contractors skip, and the part that earns trust: sometimes the answer is no, and resurfacing over your existing concrete would be the wrong call.

If your slab is badly cracked, broken into shifting sections, heaving unevenly, or actively moving with the soil, it is not a foundation, it is the problem. Laying a beautiful resin-bound surface over a failing slab does not fix the failure. The slab keeps moving, and the movement eventually shows through the surface you paid for. That is not a resin-bound flaw, it is physics: the surface is only as stable as what it sits on.

When the existing slab is failing, the honest answer is base work, removing or addressing the bad slab and building a proper engineered base, a lime-stabilized subgrade with an open-graded aggregate base, before any surface goes down. That is more work than a resurface, and we will tell you so plainly. We would rather lose the easier sale than scope a surface over a slab we knew was bad. Why resurfacing is the lower-friction, faster option

When the slab is sound, resurfacing over it is genuinely the better path, and not just because it costs less than a tear-out and rebuild. It is less of everything you do not want.

  • No demolition. Nobody is jackhammering your driveway, and no dumpster of broken concrete is sitting in front of your house for a week. The existing slab stays where it is and becomes the base.
  • No hauling and disposal. A tear-out means breaking up and carting off the old concrete, which is labor, trucks, and disposal fees. Resurfacing skips all of it.
  • Faster on site. With no demolition and no base rebuild, the job is a prep-and-lay sequence rather than a teardown-and-rebuild one. Less time with your driveway out of commission and less disruption to your week.
  • Less risk to what is around it. Demolition near a garage apron, a walkway, a flower bed, or a limestone-veneer wall carries risk. Working on top of the existing slab avoids disturbing the things next to it.
  • The same finished surface. You get the identical resin-bound result, real stone in UV-stable resin, seamless, permeable, on a slab that was going to outlive its finish anyway.

Resurfacing extends the life of a slab you already own by giving it a new, flexible, permeable wear surface, instead of throwing away a structurally good foundation to pour a new one.

What the assessment checks

Whether your slab is a candidate is not a guess, and it is not something we can responsibly decide from a photo. We assess it on site, and here is what we are actually looking at.

  • Structural soundness. Is the slab stable and intact, or is it broken into sections that move independently? This is the first and biggest question.
  • Crack width and pattern. Hairline cracks are fine. Cracks wider than about a quarter inch get repaired first. A pattern of widening, shifting cracks can be a sign of an underlying base problem rather than a surface one.
  • Movement and settlement. Are sections tilting or heaving out of plane? Differential movement points to the soil under the slab, which a surface cannot fix.
  • Surface condition and bond. Is the surface clean and sound enough for the resin-bound to bond properly, or is it spalling, flaking, or contaminated in a way that needs prep first?
  • Drainage and grade. Where does water go now, and where should it go? Resin-bound is permeable, but the water still needs somewhere to drain once it is through the surface, so the existing grade and drainage are part of the call.
